Why the Trade Benefits the San Antonio Spurs
The San Antonio Spurs can afford to trade DeMar DeRozan for many reasons. They are looking to get back to the postseason this season and trading away one of their top players might not seem like the best way to do that. This does not mean that the team should hang on to DeRozan.
First, he is a free agent after this NBA season and will not be re-signing in San Antonio. If DeRozan truly is unhappy, it would benefit the team greatly to send him away as soon as they could.
Second, they have a player named Dejounte Murray to build around. Through three games, Murray is averaging 16 points, eight rebounds, and 9.5 assists per contest.
The Spurs should be focused on adding new pieces along the perimeter with Murray and that is what they would be doing in this deal. Harris and Barton are rotation players who would add depth immediately. The Spurs have a chance to get a return for DeRozan before he leaves in free agency. This seems like a move that is inevitable.
This trade would benefit both sides right away, DeRozan would join a contending team while the Spurs could head in a different direction with their roster. Do not be surprised to see DeRozan traded sooner than later, even if it is not to Denver.
