2020 Season Outlook
While they did not make any blockbuster moves this offseason, even though they were rumored to want to pursue a trade to acquire Russell Westbrook, the New York Knicks are still very much in the running to land a big-name player at the trade deadline. They have the future draft assets and young players to include in a deal to acquire an All-Star level talent and this may be what they plan to do.
RJ Barrett and Obi Toppin are two great, young players that the Knicks will look to build with for future years, but could also be instrumental in the success of this team now. The Knicks are one, big-name player away from being a playoff team in the Eastern Conference and Knicks fans should expect Leon Rose and Scott Perry to do all they can to make this team a playoff team.
Mitchell Robinson and Julius Randle are also two younger players that played at a high-level for the Knicks a season ago, so if everything goes right for New York this upcoming season, they could sneak into the 8-seed in the Eastern Conference. Anything is possible in a 72-game season, even if it sounds crazy that the Knicks could make the playoffs.
While they have an outside shot at getting to the playoffs, it is much easier to believe that this team will win about 25-30 games this upcoming season, especially with no big name star on the roster. Now, if they do acquire a player like Victor Oladipo or Blake Griffin, the Knicks could win more than 30 games, but this roster, as it stands right now is, is in no shape to be a playoff team.
They have some great young players and five draft picks in next year’s draft, which should give the Knicks plenty of leverage in trade talks, as well as a sense of success in the near future. The New York Knicks are definitely trending in the right direction, but it is not quite their time yet. Sorry Knicks fans, it is probably going to be another long, losing season.
