Why the Trade Benefits the Utah Jazz
The Utah Jazz made a move last year for Mike Conley to find a more dynamic backcourt partner with Donovan Mitchell. There is reason to believe that Conley will bounce back, but regardless, he is coming off a disappointing first season with the team.
When considering how Conley is entering the upcoming NBA season on an expiring deal, the Jazz may need to think about their long-term answer in the backcourt alongside Mitchell. At 33-years-old, it’s not going to be Conley as he appears to be a stopgap.
A player like Spencer Dinwiddie would help the Jazz to have another guard that can get to the rim and create for teammates. With Taurean Prince spacing the floor at the four spot, there would still be a real four-out scheme with Rudy Gobert as the rim roller and rim protector.
It won’t be easy to address the point guard position without having a great selection in the NBA Draft and while being low on the ideal free agency destinations list. Making a move for Dinwiddie via trade could help to provide some stability long-term in this regard.
