Trey Burke, Dallas Mavericks

After signing the equivalent of a 10-day contract to join the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA bubble and play for them for the remainder of their seeding game/postseason run, Trey Burke made a name for himself and after only playing in 8 games for the Mavericks— finishing as their fifth-best scorer on the season.

The only four players who finished above him in scoring last season for the Mavericks were Luka Doncic, Kristaps Porzingis, Tim Hardaway Jr., and Seth Curry. With Curry being traded this offseason though, the pathway is set for Trey Burke to step up and make a big difference with the Mavericks in 2020-21.

Trey Burke is a guy who has bounced around the NBA quite a bit and while he averaged double-figure scoring early on in his career, no team was willing to commit to him long-term, resulting in him being waived by a lot of teams. After being waived early in the 2019-20 season by the Philadelphia 76ers, he signed with the Mavericks ahead of the NBA resumption of play in Orlando since Jalen Brunson was out with an injury.

The 6-foot guard made the most of his opportunity being the back-up point guard for the Mavericks and as a result, could see an uptick in minutes and production this season. In free agency, Dallas decided to sign Trey Burke to a three-year, $10M deal that not only gives him stability within an organization but allows the Mavericks to get a proven scorer off-the-bench at a very low price.

For a Mavericks team that does not have many scoring options behind Doncic and Porzingis, Trey Burke should be able to push his way into the rotation late in games and be a solid scoring option late in games. His 43.2 three-point percentage was amongst the top of the Mavericks’ roster and they will look to utilize his offensive abilities this upcoming season.

Both Jalen Brunson and Trey Burke will see minutes as the back-up point guard position, but if Burke continues to produce like he did last year, it will be hard for the Mavericks to take him off the court, especially since they will need his shooting and scoring abilities this season.
