Drummond made a much-needed leap this past year in the rim protection department. Really, he made a large leap defensively completely.
Drummond has the fastest hands of any big in the NBA. Stan Van Gundy knew this, and because of this played very aggressive on PnR’s. Drummond was able to cause havoc for opposing guards and wings outside of the paint.
Just to give an idea of how good he was on that end of the floor this past year…
There were only seven players in the NBA to have over 600 points, 400 rebounds, 200 assists, 90 steals, and 20 blocks: LeBron James, Ben Simmons, Paul George, Draymond Green, Giannis Antetokounmpo, DeJounte Murray, and Andre Drummond.
There were only four players this past season to have at least 100 steals and 75 blocks: Anthony Davis, Antetokounmpo, Josh Richardson, and Andre Drummond.
Yeah, pretty good.
But, Drummond still has a ways to go. The next step involves inside the paint, not on the perimeter. Drummond needs to become an elite rim protector for this team to reach it’s ceiling.
With the possibility of the Pistons starting Reggie Jackson, Luke Kennard, Reggie Bullock, and Griffin together, Drummond will have to protect the goal like a soccer goalie to keep this team from giving up 105 points on a nightly basis.
Averaging over 2.5 blocks a game would put Drummond up there with the elite rim protectors in today’s game.
