After being swept in the first round of the NBA playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Phoenix Suns face uncertainty about Kevin Durant‘s future with the team.
Sean Deveney reported that a Western Conference executive identified the Miami Heat as a probable destination for Durant, putting them at the top of potential suitors.
“A few teams should come up in talks,” the executive said. “The Heat would be a favorite.”
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, speaking on the Pat McAfee Show, highlighted Durant’s contract situation, emphasizing that his eligibility for a contract extension this summer presents a crucial moment for both him and the Suns.
“There’s this kind of interesting moment happening,” Windhorst said. “Kevin Durant is eligible for a contract extension… He has two years and $105 million on his contract. But, because he is eligible for a contract extension, it creates a natural moment for Durant and the team to essentially make a statement about each other.”

Durant, who has two years and $105 million remaining on his contract, could refuse an extension, possibly indicating a wish to leave Phoenix. Alternatively, the Suns’ reluctance to offer an extension might show their hesitation to commit a large contract to an aging player.
Although Durant is under contract through the 2026-27 season, a trade could relocate him to Miami, where he would team up with Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo. The Suns’ effort to create a super team with Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal this season did not meet expectations, suggesting this season could be their sole attempt.

Durant’s potential trade request could benefit both his interests and those of the Suns. Phoenix, having sacrificed numerous first-round picks to assemble its roster, could regain some assets or attract new talent for another championship run in a trade with Miami.
Adding to the narrative, Durant’s interest in Miami was evident last year when, amid turmoil within the Brooklyn Nets, he requested a trade and listed the Suns and the Heat as his preferred destinations. This prior interest not only highlights Durant’s admiration for the Heat’s competitive environment but also his ongoing curiosity about the franchise.

As discussions persist and the offseason nears, Miami could view Durant as the final piece needed for a championship, reviving a connection initially considered years ago and supported by his recent preferences. Meanwhile, the Suns must decide how to either rebuild or restructure their team, possibly without Durant.
