After the Phoenix Suns were swept by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of the NBA playoffs, ending their season with a 49-33 record, speculation has emerged about potential roster changes.

NBA reporters Shams Charania and Doug Haller of The Athletic noted that Kevin Durant was uncomfortable with his role in the Suns’ offense alongside teammates Devin Booker and Bradley Beal this season, suggesting the possibility for significant looming changes overall.

A notable trade proposition involving the San Antonio Spurs has been put forward amid these internal challenges.

According to Bleacher Report’s Andy Bailey, the Spurs could acquire Durant in exchange for Keldon Johnson, Zach Collins, and multiple draft picks. The proposed assets include 2025 and 2027 first-round picks from Atlanta and 2029 and 2030 first-round selections from Dallas.

Bailey underscored the Spurs’ wealth of assets, akin to those of the Utah Jazz, which could enable them to submit a compelling offer for Durant despite his post-prime status.

The prospect of pairing Durant with Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama is intriguing; Wembanyama is seen as a generational talent who could continue the evolutionary progression of basketball that Durant has influenced and already studies his game.

Combined with Devin Vassell, such a duo would provide the Spurs with significant offensive firepower and defensive reach. Durant recorded averages of 27.1 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game during the regular season, with shooting percentages of 52.3% from the field, 41.3% from three-point range, and 85.6% from the free-throw line.

Durant is under contract for $49.9 million next season and $53.3 million the following year. The financial implications are substantial, but the potential to compete for a championship with Durant and Wembanyama leading the way could justify the investment.

Wembanyama led the league in blocks per game this season, posting averages of 21.4 points and 10.6 rebounds, showcasing incredible potential as one of the future faces of the NBA.
