The 2023-24 NBA regular season was a disastrous one for the Detroit Pistons. They came into things hoping to at the very least compete for a spot in the NBA Play-In Tournament. Given all of the young talent on the roster from recent lottery picks and the veterans that were in place, it seemed like a reasonable goal to have.

The Pistons got off to a solid start winning two out of their first three games. But, the wheels fell all the way off after that as they went on the longest losing streak in NBA history, dropping 28 consecutive games.

That was an inexcusable stretch, especially since they made Monty Williams the highest-paid head coach in NBA history during the 2023 offseason. They finished the season 14-68 and some people wondered whether or not he would be fired after one season.

That has led the Pistons to look into adding some new leadership at the top of the front office. A head of basketball operations will be hired who will be reporting directly to owner Tom Gores.

“This past season has been incredibly difficult and frustrating for our fans, players and our entire organization,” Gores said. “We will continue to invest in our core group of young players and surround them with the right complimentary talent.”

While Williams’ job is safe, there will be some major changes to the chain of command and front office. General manager Troy Weaver, who has seen the team go 74-244 in his four seasons with the franchise, will be keeping his job as well.

In fact, the entire basketball staff will be keeping their jobs. While having continuity is never a bad thing, it is a bit surprising there won’t be more of a shake-up given just how poorly the Pistons have played under Weaver. People have been fired for much less in a shorter time as he is getting a very long leash.

“I am committed to doing whatever it takes to build a winning team,” Gores said. “Nothing is off the table. As tough as this season has been, a bright future is available to us. It’s in our power to get this right, and we will. This is a pivotal summer for the Pistons.”

Detroit’s game plan is a clear one. They want to build around their core of Cade Cunningham, Jalen Duren, Jaden Ivey and Ausar Thompson, who are all 22 and younger.

Questions remain if they are a good fit around each other given how poorly the team fared this season. Things are going to start getting more expensive as well as some of their recent draft picks have extensions starting to kick in.
