The 2023-24 NBA season has mercifully come to an end for the Brooklyn Nets. They struggled mightily after a strong start, as their entire game plan under head coach Jacque Vaughn went down the drain once Ben Simmons was sidelined by yet another back injury.
That was a big part of the reason that Vaughn was fired 54 games into the 2023-24 campaign. His second stint with the team as head coach lasted for 129 games, as he took over last season when Steve Nash abruptly stepped down seven games into the campaign.
With Vaughn being fired, it was long-time NBA point guard Kevin Ollie who took over as the interim head coach. He had hoped that he would coach his way into the full-time job, but it wasn’t meant to be.

After going 21-33 under Vaughn, the Nets continued losing under Ollie. He oversaw an 11-17 finish to the season, resulting in an ugly 32-50 finish for Brooklyn. It became evident that this roster needs a lot of work, as they missed the NBA Play-In Tournament by four games despite two teams under .500 claiming the last two spots.
With the season now behind them, their focus has turned solely to offseason tasks. The No. 1 task on their to-do list is to find a new head coach, which they reportedly are close to doing. According to NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Nets are preparing to hire Jordi Fernandez as their next head coach.
Fernandez is a top assistant coach with the Sacramento Kings, who are preparing to take on the Golden State Warriors in the 9 vs. 10 matchup in the NBA Play-In Tournament of the Western Conference.
The Nets cast a wide net and have been handling interviews for about a month now. Fernandez has been a fast-rising head coaching candidate and at only 41 years old, will be taking over on the sideline in Brooklyn.

There has been a lot of turnover on the sidelines for the Nets in recent years. Fernandez will be the fifth head coach the team has had since 2020, as the franchise has undergone major changes seemingly every year since in some fashion.
Fernandez’s resume as an assistant around the NBA for years was strong, but the work he did as head coach of the Canada National Team is what really put him on the map. Team Canada had a strong showing in the 2023 FIBA World Cup under Fernandez, which had executives around the league labeling him as one of the top assistants.
