Even though the San Antonio Spurs lost to the Denver Nuggets, their NBA star rookie Victor Wembanyama had a historic performance.
While the San Antonio Spurs are having a tough season record-wise, their rebuild looks promising with the emergence of Victor Wembanyama. Wembanyama is having a strong rookie season so far, averaging 19.2 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 2.6 blocks per game.
In a recent game against the Nuggets, Wembanyama had a historic performance with six steals and four blocks. After the game, Wembanyama spoke about his strong defensive performance.
“I like bringing something new to the game,” Wembanyama said. “I’m glad I can already put my name in history a little bit. It’s a good feeling.”
As one of the greatest coaches of all time, Gregg Popovich has coached some great players throughout his career. Furthermore, he had some high praise for the play of his superstar rookie,
“He’s playing aggressively. He’s affecting the game in a lot of different ways,” Gregg Popovich said. “He’s blocking shots. He’s scoring. He’s a willing assist man. He’s very unselfish. He doesn’t worry about making a mistake.”

While the comments from Popovich were certainly kind to Wembanyama, Nuggets head coach Mike Malone also had some nice things to say.
“A lot of guys are getting out of the way,” Malone said. “People have a phobia of being on SportsCenter, getting dunked on. Victor Wembanyama, he’s going to dunk on a lot of people. That guy is a hell of a player, he’s only going to get better.”

It isn’t often that a young player lives up to or even exceeds the expectations of hype. However, Wembanyama is doing that so far this season. With Wembanyama looking like a star in the making, the Spurs certainly have a bright future. Now, they will need to focus on continuing his development and build a strong team around him.
