The Golden State Warriors are supposed to compete for the NBA championship. It’s been that way for some time. This has been the most successful team of the last decade. If the Warriors aren’t in the title picture, the league feels slightly off balance.

At the moment, the Warriors aren’t in the title picture. This team just looks off. If you’ve been reading our page for a while, you know what that means. It’s time for the Warriors to consider making a trade.

What do the Warriors need? Frankly, they’ve got a wide range of needs. This team could use a boost of playmaking.

If that playmaking came from a player who can space the floor at an elite level and defend well, that would be a bonus.

How about Alec Burks of the Detroit Pistons?

Golden State Warriors Receive: G/F Alec Burks

By contrast, nobody expects the Pistons to compete for an NBA title. They used to. Younger fans may know the Pistons as basement dwellers, but that hasn’t always happened.

This is a franchise with a proud history. In the late 1980s, the Bad Boy Pistons were a problem. This team won back-to-back NBA championships.

The Pistons would go on to win another title in 2004. Interestingly, both title teams had a similar identity. Detroit was known for aggressive defense and physical play. Now? They are known for losing. This feels like a never-ending rebuild.

Does this deal do anything to get the Pistons out of their current funk?

No. This deal makes the Pistons a worse team. That won’t be easy to stomach. Detroit is surely hoping to start winning games at some point. At this stage, why would they make a rebuilding move?

Well, the Pistons are losing anyway. If that continues, they’ve got no reason to hang onto useful veterans. They might as well move Burks for assets. Who knows? Perhaps they’ll find their savior in the 2024 NBA Draft.

So, we’ve got them moving Burks at market value. He should be able to net them a protected first. Should the Warriors give that type of asset up for Burks?

By contrast, the Warriors are in a perfect position to make a win-now upgrade. This team unquestionably needs to make a move. The only question is whether Burks is the right target. Should the Warriors pursue a more ambitious target?

Perhaps. The Warriors have a lot of options. They could move Klay Thompson’s expiring contract, Jonathan Kuminga, and more picks to land a superstar.

At the same time, that would leave them without draft capital – and Kuminga. This roster is aging. The Warriors may not want to completely deplete their future just to boost their current title odds.

If not, Burks would be a good acquisition. He’s a do-it-all player. Burks is a knockdown shooter, a solid secondary playmaker, and a good defender. He’ll make the Warriors a better team. He may even make them as good as we expect them to be.
