One NBA writer is proposing that the New Orleans Pelicans acquire Trae Young from the Atlanta Hawks.

Fran Leiva of Fadeaway World proposed the following trade idea between the Pelicans and Hawks:

New Orleans Pelicans receive: Trae Young

Atlanta Hawks receive: CJ McCollum, Herb Jones, 2024 first-round pick, 2026 first-round pick

Young is one of the best point guards in the NBA. He’s averaging 24.4 points, 2.9 rebounds and 10.2 assists this season while shooting 35.7% from the field, 29.4% from beyond the arc and 89.9% from the free-throw line.

The Pelicans don’t have a traditional floor general on the roster, which is why Leiva believes New Orleans’ front office should figure out a way to acquire Young from Atlanta. The Pelicans would have a “Big 3” of Young, Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram if Young landed in The Big Easy.

Williamson, Ingram and the Pelicans have started this season 4-6. They are 23rd in the NBA in total assists. New Orleans needs a true point guard who can break down defenses and find open players beyond the arc and under the basket and Young fits that bill.

A two-time All-Star, Young has career averages of 25.4 points, 3.7 rebounds and 9.3 assists. The Oklahoma product signed a five-year, $215.2 million extension with the Hawks in August 2021. He’s making $40.1 million this season.

The 25-year-old Young was ninth in the NBA in total points, 10th in points per game, first in total assists and second in assists per game last season. Williamson and Ingram have never played with an elite passer and playmaker like Young. The two forwards would get so many easy shots with Young running the offense.
