One NBA writer believes Minnesota Timberwolves power forward Karl-Anthony Towns will be one of the next stars to be traded. Greg Swartz of Bleacher Report thinks the Dallas Mavericks, Atlanta Hawks and New York Knicks could try to trade for Towns if the Timberwolves make the Kentucky product available in trade talks.

“Karl-Anthony Towns has established himself as one of the best players in Minnesota Timberwolves history over the past eight years,” Swartz wrote. “He’s made three All-Star games and two All-NBA teams after being selected No. 1 overall in 2015. Given the rise of Anthony Edwards as the new face of the franchise and the new CBA’s second-apron restrictions, though, the Wolves may not be able to keep their core together.”

Towns averaged 20.8 points, 8.1 rebounds and 4.8 assists last season. The three-time All-Star signed a four-year, $224.2 million designated veteran player extension with the Timberwolves in July 2022.

NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Karl-Anthony Towns, Minnesota Timberwolves, Atlanta Hawks, Dallas Mavericks, New York Knicks Updates

Minnesota hasn’t gotten past the first round of the playoffs in the Towns era, which began in 2015-16. Multiple people around the NBA are keeping an eye on Towns’ future with the Timberwolves in the wake of Anthony Edwards signing a five-year maximum contract extension that could be worth up to $260 million.

“If Edwards and Towns don’t look like a title-worthy duo, one may have to go for financial reasons,” Swartz wrote. “If forced to choose, Minnesota should (and would) go with Edwards. While Towns has a hefty salary, a number of teams around the league could use a floor-stretching big man who can rebound, pass and be an offensive hub.”

The Timberwolves drafted Towns with the first overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. The 2015-16 Rookie of the Year has career averages of 23.0 points, 11.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists.
