One NBA writer is proposing that the Golden State Warriors trade Chris Paul to the Los Angeles Clippers for Paul George in a blockbuster deal.
Grant Hughes of Bleacher Report proposed the following trade between the Clippers and Warriors. The proposal can’t happen until September and would send George to the Warriors in exchange for Chris Paul, Jonathan Kuminga, Moses Moody and top-10 protected first-round picks in 2026 and 2028.
The Warriors acquired Paul from the Washington Wizards in the Jordan Poole trade. The Clippers wanted to acquire CP3 from the Wizards, but the Warriors beat them to the punch.
“Though CP3 should curb the turnover issues that have plagued Golden State, it’s up for debate whether he makes sense in the closing lineup,” Hughes wrote. “No such uncertainty would exist with George, who’d slot in next to Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins and Draymond Green in what would easily be the league’s most dangerous five-man unit.”
George has been in trade rumors this offseason for the first time since joining the Clippers in the summer of 2019. The New York Knicks and Portland Trail Blazers were interested in acquiring George, but things changed after New York and Portland got word that George was seeking a massive extension. The swingman is eligible for a contract extension worth around $220 million over four years.
NBA TRADES, NEWS & RUMORS: Paul George, Los Angeles Clippers, Chris Paul & Golden State Warriors Updates
George has only played in 87 out of a possible 164 games in the past two seasons. The eight-time All-Star averaged 23.8 points, 6.1 rebounds and 5.1 assists for the Clippers last season but didn’t play in the 2023 playoffs due to a knee injury.
George signed a four-year, $176 million maximum contract extension with the Clippers in December 2020. The six-time All-NBA forward will make $45.6 million next season. He has a player option worth $48.8 million for the 2024-25 season.
NBA TRADES, NEWS & RUMORS: Paul George, Los Angeles Clippers, Chris Paul & Golden State Warriors Updates
Paul averaged 13.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 8.9 assists last season for the Phoenix Suns. The guard has been “extremely eager” in his first few meetings with the Warriors, according to Kendra Andrews of ESPN.
However, Paul and Stephen Curry don’t really fit together since they are both small and play the same position, which is why Hughes thinks a George-Paul trade could work.
