So did the Raptors. That’s why they could make one of their star forwards available this summer. Will they finally part with Pascal Siakam?
Who can say? With that in mind, Siakam isn’t the only star forward on the Raptors. He’s not the only one that’s been involved in trade rumors, either. Could the Hawks trade for OG Anunoby instead?

Realistically, both of these teams are at a crossroads. Perhaps that’s why they’ve both been so prominent in rumors. Moreover, they each have questions about their roster construction.
The Raptors and Hawks both tried to double down on a certain type of player. Now, it’s fair to question whether either would benefit from more balance.
The Raptors have a lot of wings. Siakam, Anunoby, and Scottie Barnes are their three most important players. Should they redistribute their assets?

Meanwhile, the Hawks are wondering whether their dual point guard backcourt will work. At times, it appeared as if Trae Young and Dejounte Murray were not a good fit together. Does adding Anunoby offset those concerns?
Why The Atlanta Hawks Do The Deal
Not directly. Still, we like the fit here. If Young or Murray can’t develop a stronger off-ball game, the Hawks may continue to have problems. Adding Anunoby doesn’t change the fact that Atlanta’s starting backcourt is composed of two players who are best with the rock in their hands.
Still, Anunoby is at least a good fit with either. In fact, Anunoby is a perfect complement to any ball-dominant player. He’s one of the best 3-and-D wings in the NBA.

So, he’ll make the Hawks better. If they believe that Young and Murray can find their stride with another full season together, Anunoby would be a strong acquisition for this team. Should the Raptors give him up?
Why The Toronto Raptors Do The Deal
On the other hand, some Raptors fans will wonder why they’d trade Anunoby at all. Fair enough. Anunoby isn’t exactly old. If the Raptors trade Siakam, Anunoby is an excellent young player who can grow with Scottie Barnes.
Sure. So is Onyeka Onkongwu. So are De’Andre Hunter and AJ Griffin. Meanwhile, whoever Toronto selects with this unprotected first-round pick could be as well.

This isn’t complicated. From the perspective of a rebuilding team, the Raptors are getting more than they give up here. All of these players could be part of their young core. They’ve just got to trade one of their star forwards to the Hawks.
