One NBA writer believes the Dallas Mavericks should acquire Karl-Anthony Towns from the Minnesota Timberwolves in a blockbuster trade.
Greg Swartz of Bleacher Report proposed that the Mavericks trade Christian Wood, Tim Hardaway Jr., Jaden Hardy and a 2027 unprotected first-round pick to the Timberwolves for Towns. This would be a sign-and-trade deal since Wood is an unrestricted free agent.
“Adding Towns as an elite floor-spacer who can also put the ball on the floor would take the Mavs’ scoring attack to the next level and help keep Dončić happy (and rested), which is the ultimate goal for this franchise,” Swartz wrote. “Dallas also keeps Josh Green and Maxi Kleber in the deal, making sure the team at least plays a little bit of defense, too.”
Tim MacMahon, Jamal Collier and Marc J. Spears of ESPN think Towns is a player who has flown under the radar but could be a big storyline at the 2024 February trade deadline. Towns signed a four-year, $224.2 million designated veteran player extension with the Timberwolves in July 2022. Minnesota hasn’t gotten past the first round of the playoffs in the KAT era, which began in 2015-16.

The 27-year-old Towns averaged 20.8 points, 8.1 rebounds and 4.8 assists last season while shooting 49.5% from the field, 36.6% from beyond the arc and 87.4% from the free-throw line. The three-time All-Star only played in 29 games due to a serious calf injury.
A Big 3 of Towns, Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving in Jason Kidd’s system would certainly be fun to watch. The Mavericks need to have a big season in 2023-24 after missing the playoffs in 2023.

During his end-of-the-season press conference, Doncic told Mavericks reporters that he was “happy” in Dallas, but he also admitted that “something’s got to change.” The 2018-19 Rookie of the Year signed a five-year, $215.2 million designated rookie contract extension with the Mavericks in August 2021.
