Chris Paul has been “extremely eager” in his first few meetings with the Golden State Warriors, according to NBA insider Kendra Andrews of ESPN.
The Warriors acquired Paul from the Washington Wizards in the Jordan Poole trade. Paul, who has never come off the bench in the NBA, could be the Dubs’ Sixth Man next season.
“Paul has been extremely eager in his first few meetings with the Warriors, a source told ESPN, telling them he’s ready to embrace their ball movement, organized chaos style of play, and do whatever it takes to win,” Andrews wrote. “But during Paul’s introductory news conference, he said he hasn’t discussed what his role will look like yet. He also wouldn’t fully say if he would be comfortable coming off the bench.
“What the Warriors want from him is to keep it simple: don’t turn the ball over, make assists and organize the second unit, sources said. It’s presumed his job would be a bench role, as he arrived in San Francisco in a trade that saw the Warriors ship former sixth man Jordan Poole to the Washington Wizards.”
NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Chris Paul & Golden State Warriors Updates
Paul hasn’t spoken to the Warriors or head coach Steve Kerr about the intricacies of his new role. Golden State could start Paul, Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins and Draymond Green, although Paul and Curry is a small backcourt.
Paul averaged 13.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 8.9 assists last season for the Phoenix Suns while shooting 44.0% from the floor, 37.5% from 3 and 83.1% from the free-throw line. Paul and Curry worked out together on July 9 in Las Vegas for the first time since 2009.
NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Chris Paul & Golden State Warriors Updates
It’s going to be strange to see Paul play for the Warriors. In 2018, Paul’s fake laugh at Kerr went viral on social media. Most recently, Curry told Paul, “This ain’t 2014 no more” during a matchup against the Suns in March. However, Paul is looking forward to being on the other side of his rivalry with the Warriors.
