Meanwhile, the Cavaliers would be moving Allen because they have Evan Mobley. This would be a decision that they need wing depth more than they need two elite defensive bigs. 

This deal provides them with wing depth. Dort is a little undersized, but he’s an elite point-of-attack defender. Williams is a rugged role player who does the dirty work and spaces the floor. 

Can the Thunder spare them? Arguably no. At the same time, they’ve got their own Victor Wembanyama to make concessions for. Chet Holmgren should be even less physically prepared to play the 5 on a full-time basis. 

So, they’re taking a step backward to take two steps forward here. The Thunder will need wing depth following this deal.

Luckily, they’ve got the assets to acquire it – and with a new defensive anchor, they could build an elite defense in the process. Provided that Allen is available in the first place, that is.
