The Cleveland Cavaliers are more open to trading Jarrett Allen than advertised, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.
Allen did not play well in the first round of the 2023 playoffs against the New York Knicks, a series the Cavaliers lost in five games. The Texas product averaged 9.4 points and 7.4 rebounds and registered a negative plus-minus rating in Games 3, 4 and 5.
“On the same subject, there have been some whispers this week that the Cavaliers are more open to trading Jarrett Allen than advertised for the opposite reason: He appeared to struggle with the moment at various points of the Cavaliers’ five-game exit to the Knicks,” Stein wrote.
NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Jarrett Allen & Cleveland Cavaliers Updates
The Dallas Mavericks and New Orleans Pelicans have been linked to Allen, who averaged 14.3 points, 9.8 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.2 blocks for the Cavaliers this past season while shooting 64.4% from the field and 73.3% from the free-throw line. The center signed a five-year, $100 million contract with Cleveland in August 2021.
Allen has career averages of 12.0 points, 8.9 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.3 blocks with the Brooklyn Nets and Cavaliers. He was the 22nd overall pick in the 2017 draft and is only 25 years old.
NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Jarrett Allen & Cleveland Cavaliers Updates
Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com reported near the end of June that the Mavericks have been seeking a pick-and-roll partner for Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, which is why they tried to trade for Allen before the 2023 draft.
“Sources say the Dallas Mavericks, who own the No. 10 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft and have sharpshooter Tim Hardaway Jr. — a player the Cavs discussed at the February trade deadline — were one team that recently reached out about Allen’s availability,” Fedor wrote. “While it’s unclear what was offered, the Mavericks have been seeking a pick-and-roll partner for guards Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.”
It will be fascinating to see if Allen is on the Cavaliers when next season starts.
