The Minnesota Timberwolves are interested in trading for Monte Morris or Delon Wright of the Washington Wizards, according to NBA insiders David Aldridge, Josh Robbins and Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic.

The Timberwolves are looking for point guard depth behind veteran Mike Conley. The Wizards, who acquired point guard Tyus Jones from the Memphis Grizzlies, are in rebuild mode under new president Michael Winger, so the franchise should be open to moving more veterans after trading All-Star shooting guard Bradley Beal and power forward Kristaps Porzingis.

“League sources tell The Athletic that the Minnesota Timberwolves, looking for point guard depth behind Mike Conley, Jr., have engaged the Wizards in discussions about acquiring either veteran Monte Morris, Washington’s current starter at the point, or veteran Delon Wright, who again was one of the league’s better defensive guards last season after returning from an early-season hamstring pull,” The Athletic writers wrote. “So far, though, there’s been no traction with Minnesota and Washington on either Morris or Wright in initial discussions, with the Wizards not engaging the Wolves at present.”

Morris averaged 10.3 points, 3.4 rebounds and 5.3 assists for the Wizards this past season in 62 games while shooting 48.0% from the field, 38.2% from beyond the arc and 83.1% from the free-throw line. The 27-year-old will make $9.8 million next season and become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2024.

Meanwhile, Wright put up 7.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game in 2022-23 while shooting 47.4% from the floor, 34.5% from 3 and 86.7% from the free-throw line.

Washington won only 35 games and didn’t qualify for the play-in tournament despite having Beal, Kyle Kuzma and Porzingis. The 31-year-old Wright signed a two-year, $16 million contract with the Wizards in July 2022.

It will be interesting to see if the Timberwolves are able to make a trade with the Wizards, who are clearly open for business.
