Bulls Urged To Trade For Sixers’ Tobias Harris, But Not To Compete

One NBA writer believes the Chicago Bulls should trade for Philadelphia 76ers small forward Tobias Harris. However, the deal wouldn’t help the Bulls compete.

Andy Bailey of Bleacher Report thinks Chicago could use Harris’ expiring contract. The swingman signed a five-year, $180 million contract with the Sixers in July 2019. He’ll make $39.3 million next season, the final year of his contract.

With the Bulls being ranked 28th in winning percentage over the last six seasons, Bailey sees a need for the front office to consider a reboot. They would likely need to move on from Zach LaVine in a trade to a contender like the Philadelphia 76ers.

“Getting out from under a long-term contract like Zach LaVine’s (which runs through 2026-27) could kickstart such a reboot,” Bailey wrote. “And a team like the Philadelphia 76ers, who might convince themselves they’re one piece away, could use LaVine’s explosiveness. A trade involving him and Tobias Harris (whose deal ends in 2024) might make some sense,” Bailey explained.

The Bulls missed the playoffs in 2023 after making it in 2022 for the first time since 2017. Chicago won the 9-10 play-in game against the Toronto Raptors but lost the 8-9 play-in game to the Miami Heat.

Bailey believes the Bulls need to tear the roster down and rebuild. Rebuilding teams usually operate with a lot of cap space and Chicago could achieve that by taking on Harris’ contract in a trade and seeing it come off its books in the summer of 2024.
