Some teams in the NBA are more difficult to read than others. Right now, perhaps none are as challenging as the Portland Trail Blazers.
This team has Damian Lillard. They had the third overall pick in the NBA draft. Surely, they’d trade the pick to land Lillard some help, right? No. The Blazers used the pick. In fact, they used it on a player who plays Lillard’s position. Now, nobody knows what they’re going to do next.
Previous reporting suggests that Lillard may grow fed up with the Blazers for continuing to add young talent instead of favoring trading for veteran contributors. The team didn’t trade the 3rd pick in the NBA Draft and instead stood pat to select Scoot Henderson. There are now three rookies joining the team.
“I’m told a timeline for where the future will land with Damian Lillard likely extends now between this point tonight to the start of free agency and potentially into free agency,” Stadium’s Shams Charania reported during the NBA playoffs.
“Just seeing exactly what Portland is able to do. And if Portland is unable to make a meaningful move enough to improve the team, Lillard has made it clear behind the scenes, from what I’m told, also publicly, that he doesn’t want to come back into a rebuilding situation with young players.”
