Perhaps there’s a better way to frame the question. How many primary initiators does an NBA team need? 

Obviously, they need at least one. They can still stand two. Again, having multiple playmakers is not a disadvantage as long as one (or both) is willing to defer. 

What about zero? That won’t work. Any NBA team with competitive aspirations needs a primary ball-handler. 

The Brooklyn Nets didn’t exactly have one this season. It was a problem.
