On the other hand, perhaps our logic is flimsy here. Isn’t this the positionless NBA? 

With that in mind, couldn’t Grant play the 3? Sure. Perhaps that isn’t what this deal is about in the first place. 

After all, this is a sign-and-trade. This deal only happens if Grant wants it to happen. If he’s not interested in joining the Knicks, he can simply hit the open market and choose a team that has a mutual interest in signing him. 

Teams seldom get fair value in sign-and-trade situations. Why would they?
