One NBA insider believes the Golden State Warriors’ core will be back next season since that is what superstar point guard Stephen Curry wants.
Tim Kawakami at The Athletic thinks shooting guard Klay Thompson and power forward Draymond Green will be back next season.
“I think the most likely scenario is that the Warriors keep most of this together for at least one more season,” Kawakami wrote. “That’s what Curry wants. His opinion sort of matters. And I’m not even sure what ‘aging star’ is worth acquiring at this point. I guess there was the LeBron James-to-the-Warriors burble a little while ago; I don’t completely rule that out just because I know Lacob is capable of trying to do anything. But that one is almost impossible.”

Green can become an unrestricted free agent this summer if he declines his 2023-24 player option, while Thompson has one year left on his deal.
The Warriors lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2023 Western Conference Semifinals in six games after winning the championship last year.

According to Anthony Slater and Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Warriors “intend to discuss a new multi-year contract with Green” once free agency starts. Green is represented by Rich Paul of Klutch Sports Group, the superagent who represents Lakers superstars LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
“It’s why the Warriors intend to discuss a new multi-year contract with Draymond Green, either via an opt-in and extend or an entirely new deal after an opt-out, sources briefed on the matter tell The Athletic,” Slater and Charania reported. “Green has leverage: He is expected to have multiple playoff-contending teams in pursuit if he enters the open market. But Green and the Warriors appear intent on discussing an extension to their partnership, if the price is right. He just finished his 11th season with the franchise.”
Green signed a four-year, $99.7 million contract with Golden State in August 2019. He made $25.8 million this season.
