This deal is steeped in irony. There’s a lot of history between these two teams. 

At one time, Simmons was almost a Rocket. He was a Philadelphia 76er – in name only. After a disappointing playoff performance, Simmons was a healthy scratch waiting to be traded. 

Plenty of fans expected the Rockets to trade for him. After all, they had their own disgruntled star in James Harden. Ultimately, they’d opt to send him to the Brooklyn Nets for little more than draft capital.

In the end, Simmons would be traded for Harden anyway. That’s how he landed on the Brooklyn Nets.

Unfortunately, his play and health have declined to the point where many would say he’s on the worst contract in the NBA.
