Why The Philadelphia 76ers Do The Deal

For the Sixers, no potential offseason move exists in a vacuum. James Harden’s potential decision weighs on anything they could do.

If he leaves, this becomes a very attractive deal. The Sixers will suddenly need Hayward’s playmaking more than they’ll need Harris’ shooting.

On the other hand, even if Harden is leaving, this is a good deal for Philly. On the one hand, it makes them deeper – the Sixers are landing two rotation players for one. Meanwhile, Martin can replace a fair portion of Harris’ production.

More broadly, the Sixers need some change. They’ve already started the process by firing Doc Rivers and hiring Nick Nurse.

If nothing else, this deal gives them a new look. Even if it means absorbing a bad contract.
