A bad contract can limit an NBA team’s options. After all, the league has a salary cap. You can only afford so many star players.
So, if you’re paying a non-star like a star, it’s going to minimize a team’s flexibility.
On the other hand, an expiring contract can be valuable. It hardly matters how bad that deal is. If it’s only got one year left on it, some teams will see the value in it.
For example, look at Tobias Harris of the Philadelphia 76ers. He’s been seen as being on a bad contract for a long time, but soon, his deal will be expiring.
Meanwhile, the same holds true for Gordon Hayward of the Charlotte Hornets.
Could the two be swapped for each other this summer?
