Why The Brooklyn Nets Do The Deal
Let’s assume that the Nets aren’t interested in this arrangement. They’re keeping Johnson at all costs.
That would certainly be costly. Johnson will earn at least $20 million per season on the open market. Suddenly, the Nets will have one of the priciest rosters in the NBA – and no chance at winning a title.
Meanwhile, next year is the last of Nic Claxton’s contract. He garnered some Defensive Player of the Year consideration this season. He’ll receive a hefty offer in free agency next summer as well.

The Nets need to balance their books. That’s part of what they’re doing here. With that said, with their own, lightly protected pick in hand, they’ve got some flexibility.
If the Nets’ season starts to go south next year, they could hit the tank bottom hard and have a decent chance of keeping their selection.
Should the Rockets give them that chance?
