He’s a more functional small-ball 5. He may be a more viable 3. Kuminga has a longer wing span, and that has a significant impact on his positional versatility. 

On the other hand, that may not be the Knicks’ motive for making this deal at all. Kuminga may not be coming to back Randle up. He may be coming to replace him.
