Generally speaking, contending NBA teams don’t get lottery picks.
Normally, those spots are reserved for the worst teams in the NBA. With that said, sometimes, a contender owns a pick through a previous trade. When a contender gets selected in the lottery, the entire league is envious.
It’s the ideal situation – for the team, that is. For the player, it’s a mixed blessing. Sure, they’ll get to start their career in a winning environment.
On the other hand, they won’t get the role that they would have if they’d started on a rebuilding club.
For example, take Jonathan Kuminga of the Golden State Warriors. Recently, he appears to be unhappy with his role. This isn’t the first that’s appeared to be the case during his tenure with the Warriors.
