Brooklyn Nets Receive: F Doug McDermott, G Devonte’ Graham, F/C Zach Collins, 2025 First-Round Pick (Lottery Protected – PHX)
San Antonio Spurs Receive: F/C Ben Simmons
The worst contract in the NBA. That’s quite the dubious distinction. It’s not an absolute fact. That honor could belong to Kawhi Leonard. He makes more than Simmons, and in all likelihood, he’ll miss the entirety of next season.
Yet, in the modern NBA, no deal is unmovable. Simmons could be dealt. The Nets would just have to be willing to attach sweetness to his contract to make it happen.
How many sweeteners? Is it worth losing even one lottery-protected pick just to open up their salary sheet? Is it worth the Spurs’ time to take on such a poor deal for the sake of one lottery protected first?
Depending on what the team on the receiving end of Simmons’ contract sends out, the requirement for compensation could be significantly impacted.
