Now, their primary objective is to retain Irving as a free agent. That isn’t their only objective. The Mavericks need to make the group around their star backcourt significantly stronger.
If the Mavericks do manage to retain Irving’s services, they will need to make a drastic subsequent move to have a respectable supporting cast. With the need to improve defensively, there’d be nothing quite like adding one of the NBA’s greatest ever defenders.

The Mavericks need to improve rebounding, add more impactful on-ball defense, find someone to assume the low-man role, and add rim protection. Green doesn’t completely fix every single one of those areas, but he helps a lot.
