It’s hard to avoid the hometown narrative here. Let’s touch on it. 

Barrett is Canadian. That actually does matter to the Raptors. As the league’s only non-American team, the Raptors have, at times, struggled to hang onto American players.

If Barrett is interested in going home, that’s a benefit to the Raptors. 

Of course, they have to be interested in him, too. Barrett has been largely underwhelming in the NBA so far. At the same time, he’s still young enough to have plenty of potential.

Still, the Raptors also get a pair of first-round picks for taking him on here. If he reaches that potential, this could be a steal – but even if he doesn’t, they’re getting solid value.
