Success is success. It doesn’t matter how it comes once you get it. NBA teams measure success in a similar fashion.

Suppose you had a plan to make a million dollars. In the meantime, you bought a lottery ticket. If you win that million, you’re not going to mind that it didn’t come in the manner you’d planned. 

Teams may have had a plan. Sometimes, success comes from unexpected sources. 

For example, take the New York Knicks. This team was supposed to trade for a superstar.

In 2022-23, they look like contenders – even though they never did make that trade.
