In fact, first-round picks are more versatile assets. There’s always a market for them. A player’s market fluctuates based on league-wide trends.

By contrast, there will always be rebuilding teams who seek draft capital.

Still, it is true that eventually, a team will need to consolidate its draft capital. The idea is to build through the draft until you’re competitive, and then move your picks to good players who help you reach the next level.
