Why The Minnesota Timberwolves Do The Deal
If you look at this in the aggregate, it’s not great for the Timberwolves.
They’d have effectively traded Jarred Vanderbilt, Malik Beasley, the rights to draft Walker Kessler, Karl-Anthony Towns, and a first-round pick for Gobert, Sexton, and Olynyk. That is..not great.
It’s also a moot point. The Gobert trade is a sunk cost. The Wolves need to do something. There are good basketball reasons to conclude that pairing him with Towns will fail.
Besides, this deal could make the Wolves better. It allows them to pair Gobert with Jaden McDaniels in the frontcourt, which should make for an elite offense.

Sexton is the type of guard who can push the pace and complement Anthony Edwards. Most importantly, they’re getting their picks back.
Should the Jazz give them back?
