Of every player on this roster, Anunoby has been the subject of the most rumors. It’s been suggested that he’s unhappy with his role in Toronto.
That alone would be a reason to move him. Still, it wouldn’t be a good enough reason in a vacuum. They’d need to be getting a quality return for Anunoby.
That’s what they’re doing here. Moreover, they likely need a player like LaVine more than they need Anunoby. After all, they already have a pair of fantastic defensive wings in Pascal Siakam and Scottie Barnes.
What they don’t have is a strong shot-creating guard. This deal nets them one. LaVine is one of the league’s best scorers, and the Raptors need a player who can score.
