Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal
For much of this season, we debated the merits of the Mavericks’ heliocentric offense. They put those debates to rest by acquiring Irving at the deadline.
Yes, there’s a risk that he won’t stay. Irving is a free agent this summer, and is notoriously unpredictable. For the sake of argument, let’s assume he stays in town.
Dallas could still use a third option. Hayward could be that. He hasn’t been the same player he was before a series of injuries, but he’s still a solid secondary playmaker who would make this offense better.
This deal alone won’t fix Dallas. They still need a defensive big. If they can land one, who knows?
