Why The Detroit Pistons Do The Deal 

Like the Thunder, the Pistons do this deal, at least partly, to satisfy an immediate need. 

This team badly needs a perimeter defender. As it stands, they don’t have a stopper in that area. Dort is among the best in the NBA. 

He’s also 23. The Pistons are trying to walk a narrow line here. This is a rebuilding measure, but it’s also intended to improve their floor balance in the short term. 

Of course, they are parting with the best player in the deal. That’s why they’re getting a first-round pick here.

It may be unlikely to land in the lottery, but paired with Dort, it does make for a fair return for the aging Bogdanovic. After all, there will be plenty of talent in the 2023 draft as well.
