Why The Washington Wizards Do The Deal
It’s tempting to suggest that Simmons could actually be an asset for the Wizards.
After all, one can picture him alongside Kristaps Porzingis. The Latvian big man could be the stretch big man Simmons needs to unlock his potential. At the same time, that probably won’t happen.
For starters, the Wizards probably won’t retain Porzingis if they’re doing this deal. They’ll be rebuilding. More broadly, nobody should be assuming that Simmons will look like an NBA starter again in his career.
That’s not the point here. The Wizards do this deal to land four first-round picks for Beal. They won’t find that opportunity unless they’re absorbing a contract like Simmons’.
