The Sixers don’t do this deal unless they’re in a desperate situation this summer.
On a related note – the Sixers might be in a desperate situation this summer. It’s heavily rumored that James Harden could leave the Sixers. Don’t be surprised if an Embiid trade request follows suit.
In the event of that meltdown, the Sixers will have a tough time staying competitive. Their best course of action may be to tear it down and start over. If the front office agrees, this is a great deal.
After all, they’re netting five first-round picks here. That’s a tremendous haul. Meanwhile, Tyrese Maxey and Josh Giddey would make for an exciting young backcourt to build around.

Throw in a young 3-and-D like Dort, and the Sixers can’t turn this down if Embiid wants out. If nothing else, it puts the Sixers back in the NBA’s arms race.
