Of course, the amount of time a contending team has depends on several factors. 

Largely, it depends on the age of your core. The Celtics have no worries in that regard. Their most important players are largely in the vicinity of 25 and under. 

With that said, contract length counts too. Brown doesn’t have a lot of time left on his deal. Meanwhile, there are reasons to believe he could head elsewhere in free agency (more on that later). 

By contrast, the Memphis Grizzlies have nothing but time. This is a young contending core whose most important players are all locked up long-term.
