To make this trade, the Cavaliers would have to have determined that Evan Mobley was ready for full-time duties at the five. If he isn’t, they can’t afford to lose Allen. 

Let’s assume that he is. In that event, this deal gives the Cavaliers a much more modernized look. They’d have a 5 who can defend multiple positions and five-out spacing.

All they’d have to do is find a passable 3-and-D who can play the four in free agency.

Sure, losing Allen would sting. At the same time, if they have a readymade five who’s currently playing the four, getting George just makes sense.

He’s the perfect missing piece for this roster. It may require a sacrifice to land him.
