Why The Memphis Grizzlies Do The Deal
As far as the Grizzlies are concerned, they may not be following their usual pattern here. In contrast, they would be following a tried and tested formula for building a team that could compete in the NBA.
Today, contenders often construct their rosters through the draft – to a certain extent – and then complete their rosters by completing a large trade at the end. In other words, the Grizzlies would be acquiring Donovan Mitchell in a similar way to the Cleveland Cavaliers acquiring him.
Only, the Grizzlies are already contending. It is possible that Butler could put them over the top if they add him. Having him join a team that already contains Ja Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr., and Desmond Bane would make them one of the very best teams in the NBA, and they would be one of the best teams in the NBA.
There is a possibility that this may not be a slam dunk. There is no doubt that Butler is not a reliable three-point shooter.

It is still possible for the Grizzlies to shift Jackson Jr. to the 5 on a full-time basis and they would still have sufficient floor spacing. More importantly, they would still have enough talent to be competitive in the postseason.
Unless they do that this season, of course. Who knows? They might.
