Obviously, this wouldn’t be the first big trade these teams made in recent memory.
Kyrie Irving’s trade request from the Nets came out of left field. Perhaps nobody should have been surprised. A lot of what Irving does tends to come out of left field.
Moreover, it’s reasonable to question whether the organization was apprehensive about committing a long-term contract to him.
Irving is one of the most talented players the NBA has ever seen, but he’s also been the picture of unreliability.

With that said, he and Luka Doncic can take these Mavericks far – if Irving resigns with them this summer, that is. Assuming he does, there’s no telling what kind of win-now moves the Mavs will make this summer.
