Why The Charlotte Hornets Do The Deal 

The Hornets are hoping to have good luck in the draft lottery. This deal will depend on their fortunes. 

If they draft one of Scoot Henderson or Amen Thompson, their elite backcourt forms itself. Even if the Hornets walk away with Keyonte George or Nick Smith Jr. it probably makes more sense to keep their assets than it does to trade Beal. 

On the other hand, if the Hornets draft Victor Wembanyama, they might as well lean into win-now mode. Even if they land Ausar Thompson, Cam Whitmore, or Brandon Miller, they might want to get Ball a stronger backcourt partner. 

This deal does that. It also allows them to move Terry Rozier into a sixth-man role, where he’ll be a strong challenger for the league’s award.
