Of course, neither of these former lottery picks was supposed to be such risky acquisitions. 

There are different explanations for their respective declines. With that said, both serve as cautionary tales. When it comes to NBA prospects, there are no sure things. 

In fact, it was obvious early that Ball probably wouldn’t be a franchise player. He did a great job of reinventing his game. Unfortunately, chronic injuries have limited his availability. 

By contrast, Simmons looked the part of a superstar for several years. Some combination of physical and mental ailments seem to have limited his effectiveness.
