It is important to note that the Raptors are not necessarily doing this deal in order to acquire Ball. 

Despite this, there are some upsides to doing so as well. According to recent reports, it has been suggested that the Raptors are interested in acquiring young players in order to build around Scottie Barnes in the future. A healthy Ball would be perfect. 

When Ball is healthy and playing well, he can be an elite three-and-d wing who can also make plays in transition, where Barnes happens to excel.

However, he is too much of an injury risk to trade for VanVleet on his own, so we do not recommend a trade for him.

That is exactly why the Raptors will also be able to land a first-round pick in this deal. As long as the Raptors can find a way to land a distant non-protected pick in exchange for VanVleet, then they will be willing to part with him.
