It may be argued that the Houston Rockets ushered in the era that saw NBA trades led by the “picks for a star” approach.
As soon as James Harden requested a trade in the beginning of 2019-20, he was sent to the Brooklyn Nets. As a result, they received only four first-round picks and three swaps in return, and not one significant player at all. In the history of the NBA, this was the most draft capital that any team had received.
Some might suggest that the Rockets fumbled the deal in the end. For the time being, it is too early to say whether or not it will be a success.
However, it does seem fair to assume that if they had landed an interesting young player in return, they may not have been the worst team in the NBA for the third consecutive season if they had received an interesting young player in return.

Take a look at the Jazz, for example. As part of their big summer sale, they landed a number of players, including Lauri Markannen. There is no doubt that they are still a very competitive team even now.
